School Rank is built entirely from publicly available South African government datasets. We don't collect data from schools directly, and we don't independently verify every field — see our disclaimer for what that means for accuracy.
School master list (NatEMIS)
Core school records — name, phase, sector, province, district, address, contact details, quintile, no-fee status and enrolment figures — come from the Department of Basic Education's National Education Management Information System (NatEMIS) master list, the official register of all public and registered independent schools in South Africa. This dataset covers all 25,527 schools listed on this site.
Matric (NSC) results
6,669 schools have matric result data on this site, sourced from the Department of Basic Education's published National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination results, including candidates who wrote, candidates who achieved the NSC, and the resulting pass rate at each reporting school (examination centre).
Subject-level results
Subject pass rates (Mathematics, Physical Sciences, English, Accounting and others) are drawn from the same published NSC results, broken down by subject at each examination centre.
How pages are generated
Fee guidance, application steps and school/area overview text are generated programmatically from each school's official classification (quintile, sector, phase, province) and standard provincial admissions processes — they summarise typical patterns for that classification, not school-specific policy. Always confirm exact fees and requirements with the school directly.
Update frequency
We refresh this dataset periodically as the Department of Basic Education publishes updated NatEMIS and NSC data. Because government data releases are not continuous, some details may lag the most recent academic year.
Something out of date?
If a school's details have changed, please tell us — corrections are reviewed against the latest available official data.
